This is the sort of review you should be careful of. You see,
I love Philip K. Dick novels, I love dykey looking women, I
love
Kung Fu movies. I have no choice, in other words, but to love The
Matrix which pretty much is a mix of all three (I would have preferred
a little more of that good looking Trinity, though). Yup, a cyberpunk
Phil Dick Kung Fu movie. That's pretty much all I'm going to say
about the Matrix. If you don't want to see anything like that, then
don't go. Otherwise, keep your mind open, don't get your expectations
too high and go catch this movie.
I've probably said too much already, but I'll
add
a few things. Keanu is in a mainly reactive role here, and doesn't
get much of a chance to screw up the movie. In fact, I liked him.
Carrie Ann Moss is really rad looking and when's she's in action, I pretty
much melted. Laurence Fishburne has kind of a thankless role that
he pulls off well, thanks to the effortless authority of his acting and
his voice. But the one who really blew me away was Australian actor
Hugo Weaving as the sinister Agent Smith. Looking a lot like John
Sayles in The Brother From Another Planet, Weaving gives Smith the '90s
version of the Darth Vader voice; a voice that manages to simultaneously
amuse and thrill, chill and tantalize. I'm keeping my eye out for
this guy. You should too.
