Movies: What Goes Where

Sometimes you've seen a movie, and want to see another like it. Or sometimes you just hate scrolling down a long list of movies.  Or you just have to separate the food on your plates into little piles; peas in one hemisphere, potatoes in the other.  Here at Lazy Bastard, we understand and sympathize. We've broken down our reviews of nearly 50 films into discreet bins for easy perusal.  Only when dealing with the most obvious films (stuff everyone's heard of) do judgments about quality enter into the groupings.

HK Action Movies

In a class by themselves.  The rich thick blood of innovation flows through these movies, even if they roll through the nearly collapsed veins of revenge flicks and crime capers.

  • Ashes of Time
  • The Blade
  • Gorgeous
  • Heart of Killer
  • Kung Fu Leung Strikes Emanuelle
  • Lady Reporter

    HK Wannabes

Sometimes they're movies made by former HK directors and stars.  Sometimes they're made by film geeks trying, like Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo, to recreate what they love.

    Wacky Non-Pretentious Non-HK Foreign Films

Movies that you can't actually believe exist.  But they do.  God love 'em, they do.

Pretentious, But Still Staggering, Foreign Films

You don't have to work so hard to find the art in these movies, which means they lack a certain challenge for the true film nut. Movies that film instructors feel good reading papers on.

    Oddball Classics

Movies accepted by mainstream of their day that have some surprises to them.

  • American Beauty
  • Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
  • Crumb
  • Halloween
  • Jason and the Argonauts
  • Mr. Majestyk
  • Planet of the Apes

    Decent Stuff

Stuff you can find without too much difficulty in the video store.  The "hey, that was pretty good" movie.
  • American Pie
  • Burn, Witch, Burn
  • Contact
  • The Funhouse
  • Gattaca
  • Kurt & Courtney
  • A Life Less Ordinary
  • Rushmore
  • Shrek

  • Iffy Stuff

Film geeks will rate bad movies with brilliant bits in them higher than okay movies with nothing spectacular in them.  This category is where the okay movies end up, along with those movies that aren't very good but have some cool stuff to them (but not quite cool enough to rave about).  The movies that Luke would spit out of his mouth.  The movies that can be quick to fade from the mind or cause verbal summaries that begin with "Ehhhh...."  The movies that you expected more from, but can't quite badmouth.  The type of movie that Hollywood is doing in larger and larger numbers every day.

    Crappy Stuff

The movies capable of causing rue.  The reviews are frequently more fun to read than the movies are to watch, and can usually be read without bothering to see the movie.  Crappy movies (and reviews of crappy movies) can also be very instructive to potential filmmakers.  But this is sort of like saying contracting Syphilis can be very instructive to potential doctors.
